myfood24 celebrate Women In STEM

Every second Tuesday in October women from across the globe come together to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day. A day dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths – subjects that males have historically dominated. The main aim of Ada Lovelace Day is to create and raise the profiles of female role models within the STEM sectors to encourage more females into these subjects and careers, something we at Dietary Assessment are very passionate about.

Why do we need more female role models in STEM?

Key findings from a report by PwC looking at the disparities between females and males within STEM found that only 64% of women studied a STEM subject at school, compared to 83% men; and when it came to studying at University this dropped to 30% of females but 52% males. Perhaps unsurprisingly this translates to fewer females with STEM careers, as shown by a recent UK report from WISE finding that only 24% of all jobs in STEM industries are held by women.

The PwC report also found that 78% of females could not name someone that inspired them to work in STEM, highlighting the need for more women in leadership roles (currently at 5% in the tech sector) to provide more role models for younger women to motivate them into similar careers.

Proud to be different

But here, at Dietary Assessment Ltd, things are different. We are proud to have a strong and determined female founder, Professor Janet Cade, driving all things myfood24 to the forefront of digital health.

“As an academic leader in nutrition, I was inspired to create a new approach to measuring diet. I hope to inspire female leaders around the world in establishing business ideas linked to nutrition and food science.” – Prof Janet Cade, Founder of myfood24.

Women In STEM

Janet is the Director of the company alongside her role as Professor of Nutritional Epidemiology at the University of Leeds, in both roles Janet acts as a fantastic role model for women, encouraging and empowering them to be bold and brave.

Not only do we have a female leading our health tech company, but the majority of our team are women – a fact we’re extremely proud of.

Here’s what our team has to say

Sarah Beer, Nutritionist and Customer Support Manager:

“I have been very privileged to have so many strong female role models in my life and working in a majority female company with a female founder in STEM is part of that, it is important more women continue to be involved in STEM and follow in the footsteps of the pioneering women before us:

Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in the world; it’s your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.’” – Mae Jemison, first African American female astronaut in space.

“I’m proud to say that our data team here at myfood24 is 100% women. It’s important to give opportunities to fellow women in STEM where you can.” – Grace Williams, Nutritionist and Database Manager

“It is so important to celebrate women in science, and their brilliant minds. As a mother with two girls, they both know women are capable of everything and have the potential to choose any path they so desire.” – Henrietta, Business Development Manager

“It’s important to celebrate Women In STEM for they are as skilled as men. We’ll achieve something greater together. Science has no gender.” – Anaïs Hasenböhler, Database Support Assistant.

“Working with a team dominated by women and seeing the great achievements within the company makes me feel more empowered about being able to succeed in STEM careers’’ – Paulina Boniek, Database and Customer Support Assistant.

Steve Kerridge, Managing Director.

“When I first met Janet I was inspired by her vision of reducing diet-related disease globally. She has dedicated much of her working life to research and I had the opportunity to help translate that into a commercial solution that could change people’s lives for the better. So we launched Dietary Assessment, a spinout company from the University of Leeds.

Janet is at the forefront of everything we do, whether that’s helping to set the strategy or deciding what product features to add to myfood24, our eHealth solution for nutrition management. Over time, we have built a strong team, driven and led by females. When we recruit a man they have to be comfortable with that, not the other way round!

The world of tech is often dominated by men so it’s fantastic to see our female team making such an impact for the company and on the world around them.”

At Dietary Assessment Ltd, we’re proud to support the women working in our company and within the nutrition industry, highlighting their successes and continuing to make a strive towards gender equality in the workplace.

There is no doubt that the number of women in STEM will increase over the years if young females can look up to more women in leadership roles. It’s important that teachers, lecturers and companies change the conversation around STEM to empower women and encourage them to pursue their passion.
